DRAINAGE SYSTEM

The monsoons of August 2007 brought unprecedented rains; 250mm in less than 12 hours. Extensively deployed relief efforts by DHA to the emergent situation were overwhelmed by the enormity of the flood waters causing the DHA residents to undergo a nightmarish situation for more than 8 long weeks besides causing financial loss and damage to the property. The only viable option to address the crisis was to take a momentous step forward to put in place the system as a permanent solution.

Following the directions of the Governing Body, Comd 5 Corps President Executive Board (PEB), took bold initiative and directed DHA to immediately take stock of the technical, organizational and infrastructural inadequacies and to address it on a war footing. A viable strategy was evolved for execution of the work M/s Techno-Consult International a renown Consultant was tasked to design the drainage system. After its formal approval by DHA Executive Board, the work was commenced on war footing – round the clock work with dedicated and continued hard work of DHA Staff. The mammoth task of laying 36 Km long extensive drainage network worth Rs. 2.2 Billion in built up environment, was completed within record time of 6 months, right before the advent of next monsoon season.

The residents of DHA expressed extreme satisfaction and publicly appreciated the efforts of DHA for revamping the drainage system. In design perspective, a network comprising seven Main Trunk Drains (MTD) with interconnecting Interceptor Drains has been laid. MTDs terminate at Beach Ave on Seaview and drain out rain water into Arabian Sea. The construction of MTDs was done in the affected areas where no storm water network existed. Existing drains have also been restored by rehabilitation. Provision of new drainage system has seen through the extensive rain spell of July 2009 wherein the water has been drained off the effected areas of DHA within 8 hours and save the residents from past difficulties.
